A magnitude 5.9 earthquake (depth 10 km) struck Ranau, Sabah state, near Kota Kinabalu, on 5 Jun. As of 8 Jun, 16 fatalities were confirmed and some 130 climbers were evacuated. Rescue and recovery operations were hampered by rubble and thick clouds that prevented climbers from descending without assistance and helicopters from retrieving bodies. The earthquake damaged roads and buildings, including schools and a hospital on Sabah's west coast.

In response to the earthquake, the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) sent a 25 member team to the area with paramedics, engineers, search and rescue staff, and Fire and Rescue Departments in affected districts were mobilized to monitor and assist the situation.

Limited airlift capacity continues to pose a challenge in delivering shelter and other relief goods to remote villages ahead of the monsoon. Reaching some 864,000 people who have lost their homes and live below the poverty line is critical within the next two weeks. The Humanitarian Country Team has initiated preparedness planning for the possible impact of floods to 18 flood-prone districts.

At least 87 people have been infected in an outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea, with six fatalities reported as of 8 Jun. About 2,300 people have been placed under quarantine and nearly 1,900 schools have been closed as the country focuses on containing the outbreak - the largest outbreak outside of the Middle East.

The majority of school closures (1,255) are in Gyeonggi province, an area outside Seoul where the outbreak started. Other closed schools are in the Gangnam region, near the Samsung Seoul hospital - the most affected hospital in the city. The Government is operating a public hotline and sent out nationwide text alerts on 6 Jun with instructions on how to prevent infection.
